Ethembeni School was established in October 1984 by the former Department of Education and Training as a State-Subsidised Special School for Learners with Physical Disabilities and Visual Impairments. The Ethembeni Association is responsible for raising additional finance.
The School is situated in the Inchanga ( Cato Ridge) area in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. We have a total enrolment of 270 learners.
The school has fully qualified Nurses, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and a Social Worker. Children who need further specialised care are taken to nearby hospitals on a regular basis.
The school follows the mainstream curriculum and syllabi in each subject, from Pre-Primary up to Grade 7. Initial assessments are done to determine best possible placements for each child. Learners who are leaving school are assisted with applications for further training or job placement.
A wide range of sports and cultural activities are offered.
Class excursions to places of interest around Durban and Pietermaritzburg are undertaken regularly.
Due to a decrease in financial assistance from the Government, the school relies more and more on the parents, our community and generous donors. A large number of our parents are unemployed and cannot afford the Boarding fees.
